The Homeland Security Department has stood up a joint program office bringing together Customs and Border Protection, Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Coast Guard officials to strategize next steps for adopting commercial solutions to replace land mobile radio, said DHS Chief Information Officer Richard Spires at a Feb. 24 AFCEA Bethesda event.

“We made significant investment–billions of dollars in investment–as a department in…classic land mobile radio capabilities,” said Spires at the event. “And yet we have this wave of commercial capability that is really outstripping everything that we’ve done in our traditional land mobile radio capability.”
